Your Thoughts Become Things.

I went from being a doubter to a believer. It seems like such a simple concept now. But I had never really considered the power of my thoughts until I read Rhonda Byrne's book, "The Secret."  I was more in a reactive state—reacting to circumstances and opportunities that appeared in my life instead of creating those circumstances and opportunities. Sure, I hoped for the best but I also feared the worst, and when "the worst" materialized, I thought it was just by chance.  In some ways, I felt that planning for the worst was a logical way of approaching life and a good way to hedge risk.

I didn't realize that focusing on my fears and doubting my ability to achieve my goals actually could result in my fears and doubts becoming my reality.  But, reading The Secret and learning about the Law of Attraction changed the way I view the world and my life.

Basically, the Secret (a.k.a. The Law of Attraction) is this: if you focus on something, ask for it, and then let go and trust that it will come to you...it will come to you.  In fact, it must come to you. When I first read this, it sounded great, but I didn’t honestly believe it. I kind of thought the book was just a feel good, self-help book. The book recounts countless tales of someone asking the universe for money and then money showing up to them or someone asking the universe for their dream job and then landing that dream job the next week. I wanted to believe it. It sounded good. But, I just couldn’t allow myself to believe it.  Maybe it was the “lawyer brain” in me. I thought if this were really true then why wouldn't everybody be doing this? Why wouldn't everybody be using the power of intention to create their dream life? I finished the book, but then I dropped it. It was too good to be true.

But days after finishing the book, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. What if I really did have the power to turn my thoughts into my reality? So, I tested it. Before I went to bed, I wrote on a piece of paper, “I want a free cup of coffee.” I folded the paper and put it on my nightstand. The next day, I had forgotten about the note. I woke up, had a busy morning at the law firm, and met a client for lunch. We finished up lunch and paid the bill. Right as we were about to walk out, it started pouring rain. We decided to wait it out a bit. Then, the waitress came to us and said, “Y’all can’t go out in that rain! How about a free cup of coffee while you sit here and wait?” This moment changed my life. I started to believe that my thoughts really could become things.

What you think about, talk about, believe strongly about and feel intensely about, you will bring about. The concept is simple, and it is not new.
